Who is Sustainable Web Design In 20 Lessons for?

The book is for the web designer and the intermediate website owner. It will teach you what sustainable web design is and give you valuable tools you can use to make your website more sustainable. You will also get introduced to ethical design, which is the art of putting people before business.

There is a handful of books available loaded with valuable information about how polluting the internet is, but none of them is telling you exactly how you can make a difference. They all talk about the bigger picture timelessly but leave it up to you to figure out how you can apply these principles. Instead of letting you fence for yourself, I have included the best knowledge I have gained over the years working with sustainable web design and written it into 20 separate lessons. Every lesson is full of valuable information and action you can apply right away, and for each step, you take you are helping us towards a more sustainable world wide web.

A few words from Ismael Velasco

"If you're a climate-conscious but busy web developer wanting to green your practice, Sustainable Web Design in 20 Lessons by Michael Andersen is your ideal starting point. This book has a completely practical focus, informal but crystal clear writing like the best tutorial blogs, and a light touch toward the Big Picture, covering it just enough to "get it" but not so much that it takes you away from diving straight into practice. You can (and should) read it cover to cover, but you can also take on the chapter that covers just what you're wondering about for a particular job: where should I host my client's app? How do I green my CSS or optimize my JS? Do I need a CDN? I've been asked for a video background: what do I do? Yes, but HOW do you cache an API? The websites and apps that we're building are one of the major drivers of climate change, and when we green even one, we're not just reducing our carbon footprint (read about it in the book!) but the footprint of thousands of people who will visit our site. Your day-to-day web development practice can be impactful climate action: this book will help you make it so."
